Uma pesquisa do Laborat\u00f3rio Cold Spring Harbor, nos Estados Unidos, sugere que a fuma\u00e7a do cigarro estimula os pulm\u00f5es a produzir mais ACE2, a enzima utilizada pelo novo coronav\u00edrus para “se agarrar” \u00e0s c\u00e9lulas humanas. A descoberta, relatada no \u00faltimo s\u00e1bado (16) na revista Developmental Cell, pode explicar por que os fumantes parecem ser particularmente vulner\u00e1veis \u200b\u200b\u00e0 Covid-19.<\/p>\n
Desde os est\u00e1gios iniciais da pandemia do novo coronav\u00edrus, cientistas observaram diferen\u00e7as dram\u00e1ticas na forma como a Covid-19 atinge fumantes e n\u00e3o fumantes. Segundo um estudo publicado no in\u00edcio de abril, por exemplo, quem fuma tem um risco 14 vezes maior de desenvolver quadros graves da infec\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n
Tendo isso em vista, a equipe do Laborat\u00f3rio Cold Spring Harbor resolveu investigar o que leva a esse agravamento do quadro da doen\u00e7a nos fumantes. “Come\u00e7amos a reunir todos os dados que pudemos encontrar”, afirmou Jason Sheltzer, coautor do estudo, em comunicado. “Quando reunimos tudo e come\u00e7amos a analisar, vimos que tanto os ratos que haviam sido expostos \u00e0 fuma\u00e7a em laborat\u00f3rio quanto os humanos que eram fumantes tiveram um aumento significativo da ACE2.”<\/p>\n
Segundo os cientistas, os maiores produtores de ACE2 nas vias a\u00e9reas s\u00e3o as c\u00e9lulas produtoras de muco, chamadas c\u00e9lulas caliciformes. Sabe-se que o tabagismo aumenta a preval\u00eancia dessas part\u00edculas que, consequentemente, produzem mais ACE2 nos pulm\u00f5es e aumentam a vulnerabilidade ao Sars-CoV-2.<\/p>\n
